Our brother Tom was diagnosed with Type 1 Juvenile Diabetes when he was six years old.  Though just a small boy, Tom accepted and embraced his condition, and began his life-long journey of self-care with humor and incredible determination.  Tom loved life and was happiest when he was with the love of his life, his wife Mary Lou, and when he was with the children he taught and mentored in his long career as an educator and a coach.  

Tom enjoyed travel and adventure, which included horseback riding, motorcycles, skydiving, and bungee jumping - he even once convinced some of his less-adventurous sisters to join him in a bungee jumping adventure in Las Vegas! Tom’s humor was contagious, and his kindness and compassion towards others was often extraordinary.  He was a person of intellect who enjoyed sharing his thoughts and ideas with others, and he always approached all things in his life, both the good and the difficult, with boundless energy and enthusiasm.  Tom is missed by his sisters, nieces and nephews, and by the rest of our extended family, as well as by so many others whose lives he touched and made maybe a wee bit better.

With T1D, a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin—a hormone essential to turning food into energy. The daily life of someone with T1D brings a multitude of challenges, including insulin injections  that need to be carefully balanced with eating and activity, disruptive glucose monitoring, sleepless nights—and   wishing for a tomorrow where this struggle doesn’t exist.

Living with T1D means there are no days off and there is no cure. But there is hope.
